About Us

Our Mission

The Point, an initiative of the Australia Institute, helps readers make sense of the most important issues affecting them today.

Democracy thrives on high expectations. The less faith people have in government, and the more people shun the project of democracy, the easier it is for those with power to extract more for themselves.

Too often, democratic choices which affect everyone are hidden behind jargon, technical language, and ‘insider’ conversations.

The aim of The Point is to do just that: get straight to the point.

Our belief is simple: knowledge should be publicly accessible. Democratic choices should be clear and open for the public to participate in, not available to a select few. We strip away the jargon and explain public policy in plain English, giving people the tools to understand what is happening and why.

By bringing you quality research, analysis, explainers and factchecks from experts in their field, we aim to connect the dots between policy, politics, and everyday experience, helping readers see clearly how democratic choices impact their day-to-day lives.
