The annual Stanley Awards, Australia’s premier awards for cartoonists, has announced its long list for best climate cartoon honours. Born out of a boycott of fossil fuel sponsorship, from this year the prize is named in honour of Jon Kudelka, whose principled stand in 2023 inspired fellow cartoonists to withdraw from the Walkley Awards.
The Riff Raff Radical Marching Band played pop songs and protest tunes for more than half an hour before bank staff and police asked them to leave.
Two musicians – a trumpet player and sousaphone player were arrested after failing to comply.
They were taken to Roma Street Watchhouse and banned from returning to the bank branch.
“We’re unashamedly here to make some serious noise that ANZ’s Board cannot ignore, and we will continue to take action until they rule out funding the pipeline,” said Rising Tide spokesperson and Brisbane resident Donna Smit.
The protest was the latest escalation in Rising Tide’s campaign calling on ANZ to rule out funding the North to East Australia (NEA) pipeline.
Last week, six protesters carrying giant inflatable ‘poo’ emojis were arrested for occupying the same ANZ branch in Brisbane’s CBD.

The proposed 1,561-kilometre gas pipeline would connect the NT’s Beetaloo Sub‑basin to APA Group’s existing South West Queensland pipeline.
“ANZ is the only remaining bank of the big four banks that has yet to rule out funding the North to East gas pipeline, which would open up what could be the largest and highest emitting gas basin in Australia’s history,” said Ms Smit.
“It is time for ANZ to join the rest of Australia’s financial institutions and clean up its climate policy, rather than continuing to bankroll the expansion of gas and fracking.”
Rising Tide claims a confidential source has told the group that ANZ CEO Nuno Matos and the bank’s board will consider its 2026 environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies in November.
Campaigners want ANZ to use the review to rule out financing the pipeline.
The group says it will step up its peaceful but disruptive protests ahead of the reported meeting.
